First Takes: K-7 Video

We will be uploading some videos that headquarters has produced in the next week or two. However, being the sort of hands-on guy that I am, I thought it was important to post some other samples so there would be a wider range of video for all of you to look at.

When I started to write the copy for my post yesterday, K-7 Movie "Sound" Primer, I was thinking that I'd briefly touch on the sound recording options of K-7, and then in a separate post share my initial impressions as a "user" about the video recording capability shooting with a pre-production camera with firmware versions 0.34 and 0.35.

However, I realized that there are so many facets to the new movie mode in the K-7, as well as it's other rather "deep" set of improved and new features, that I decided to try and combine a few initial observations about both sound and video in this post which is clearly only my first take on this new video era of SLR's that we're embarking on. As we've been extremely busy testing and confirming all the various features in the pre-production samples, I will not list the specs here. Sites like dpreview and imaging resource have down a great job in detailing all the speeds and feeds in their respective "first looks". Since I did post some photos yesterday of the Rode Stereo VideoMic, you might want to check out imaging resource's comments about the K-7 internal mic and their use of the Rode mic since we gave them a unit to test as part of their K-7 Hands-on Preview.

Based on my initial and limited experiments shooting video with the K-7, here are some observations.

STABILIZED VIDEO
The K-7's in-camera shake reduction is going to be a big plus for allowing one to produce smooth, non-jerky video clips. I've fooled around holding the K-7 at arms length and shot video in wide sweeping motions moving the camera up and down as I walk around. The resultant video looks remarkably smooth. Based on my hand-held and very casual videos shot with the DA*200 and DA*300, SR video will be very important when using longer, heavier lenses.

SOUND RECORDING
Advancements in technology typically never come without some compromise or challenge. Our SR system is doing an incredible job in stabilizing images, and offering even greater capabilities than possible in the past. For example, "Composition Correction" is a new feature of the K-7 that takes advantage of our stabilization system. When shooting on a tripod, it's possible to fine-tune your framing by manually adjusting the position and rotation of the image sensor. The drawback to SR, now that we've incorporated video, is that the SR motors create a definite "whine" or "buzzing" that despite our attempts to totally dampen it can be detected when using the internal mono mic on the K-7. Depending on the type of video you're shooting and the level of ambient noise that's present while recording, you might find this noise less than pleasing. For casual video footage, such as my little league baseball video clip, you're likely not to even notice. However, if you're doing serious video work, we included a 3.5mm stereo jack on the K-7 thus allowing you to use a high quality external mic.

TRUE APERTURE CONTROL
Based on my initial experiments, being able to explicitly set your aperture when shooting videos is going to be a big plus. It's really important in video to have control over the DOF and decide when you want a soft look or let everything in the frame be sharp. While you can only select aperture at the beginning of a video clip, in most cases you wouldn't shift from say f/2.0 to f/8.0 in a single scene. The other benefit of aperture control is being able to match the same DOF and "look" from a video with the way you control that same lens when shooting stills. For example, I've started to experiment shooting with my beloved FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited and it's really encouraging to see that the 31mm is going to produce the same beautiful color, contrast and feel on video.

FIRST TAKE VIDEO SAMPLES
One thing that immediately struck me when I started testing the K-7 is just how challenging it will be to thoroughly test video. Not only do you have to test a wide range of lighting and sound situations, there are the tens of lenses of different focal lengths and speeds that need to be shot with, as well as seeing the effects of shooting at different apertures, etc, etc. For this reason, and recognizing that I had to start producing some sample videos, I've tried to keep the selection of videos for my first take pretty simple. However, I have tried to select video clips that show or give you a glimpse of the likely capabilities inherent in video recording with the K-7.

UPLOADING AND SHARING VIDEO
Just a word of caution for anyone that's viewing or planning to upload videos. Not all video hosting sites are delivering full HD video when you play them. From my experiments and talking to a very seasoned cinematographer, even though YouTube offers "HD" video playback, in reality your videos are being processed and down sampled to the equivalent of 540p. Therefore, I would place no faith or base your judgement on any camera's video capability by pixel peeping through videos on YouTube. I've chosen to use Vimeo for my video hosting and sharing, and have confirmed that the size of my native file (.AVI) is the same as the HD file that Vimeo is streaming to you.

Lastly, I have embedded my first take video in this post directly from Vimeo and it does play in HD mode, as indicated by the little blue bug on the right side of the viewer frame. If you want to see a larger view of this video, simply click on the Vimeo logo at the bottom of the viewer frame.

Wow. I can't wait. This looks great.
I guess I'll be buying a videomic too.

rye said...

Also, if you expand the video to make it full screen. It is best to turn scaling OFF... this way you don't get a stretched image.

Ned Bunnell said...

Rye, thanks. I just removed the scaling button from this player view to eliminate any confusion. Better for someone to click on Vimeo and view video there if they want a larger view.

Hey Ned.
The candle video, You say that that would be something like Iso 1600, 0.3 exposure and F2.0
Well, that would make the video at Iso 6400, F1.4 at 1/30th Because that is the minimal shutter speed, the other two are at maximum.
The video contains some posterizing in the candle scene. Can you tell us if that was there in the initial output, or if it is a result of the compression for Vimeo.com (which is what I assume).
Again thank you for the excellent video and look forward to your next one.

Thinking to myself, "Well that's an interesting way to cut an orange..."

Thanks for the samples.

Could you also elaborate on how you like manual focusing? Especially whether you can focus precisely while using an f/1.4 lens ;-)

I love the candor in your post (in regards to the K7 limitations) and I think that says a lot about Pentax.

Video is going to be great for when I hike up to Everest Base Camp. Can't imagine anything better than a K-7 with weather-sealed DA* lenses...

I loved this output. Great quality. Really looking forward to play with this :)

Thanks for this demonstration. This is certainly going to change the way we write on blogsites. We will be able to show still images and explain how they were made using the HD Video mode. Imagine what it can do for a photographer bio!

The possibilities are mind bogging, my mind anyway.

Good grief, Ned. I've been all set to buy a good little HD consumer camcorder for $1,000. After all my K20 is only a year old. Sigh... Maybe my video camera will be a dSLR! :-)

Jim said...

Geez, now I've got to budget for a new body...Thanks Ned...

Seriously, I have been waiting for a camera I could shoot both web video and stills for our newspaper with.

Anyone who's ever tried to juggle both knows the limitations, and it's not pretty.

I'd also like to second the others in thanking you for your honesty. I've dealt with a few folks from Pentax since I started using your gear (when I got my first K100) and have been nothing but pleased. Everytime I've had a question, Joe or Michelle has had the answer.

And, most especially, thank you for the mic jack. As I've posted before, audio is a very important part of any video production, and the inability for many cameras to get a mic on the subject is inexcusable. I'll probably end up attaching my XLR-mini adapter to the base plate and using it to feed my wireless setup. Should be quite the conglomeration, but I bet it'll work:-)

The Vimeo FAQ says: "Don’t be fooled, Vimeo HD is true 1280×720, up to 25fps (30fps soon!)" If this limitation is still valid, then Vimeo cannot render the K7 footage correctly. While the spatial performance of the K7 video is outstanding, the temporal shows some amount of jerkiness (although I was not able to download your file and play it frame by frame). I guess it is still not known to the public if this is caused by video transcoding or by the K7 video encoder itself.

LRocks said...

Ned,
I love your videos they are great!
I don't know what it would take but you need to get this in the hands of someone who can show what it can do. Did you see what Vincent Lafore did for Canon? I know that I am not in his league but I work in commercial production everyday. I would do anything to handle the K7 in a commercial production environment. I would definitely show its true capabilities.

Hi Ned,

I am doing a bike ride called "Wheels North!" (www.wheelsnorth.org). It's a 1000 mile bike ride from Santa Rosa, CA to Seattle, WA to help fight Histiocytosis. The ride starts on July 4th, 2009. I am wondering if it would be possible to get a K-7 to document the ride in photos and video. I think it will be an amazing journey with many great pictures as well as being an interesting story for Pentax to share with customers. If it is possible to get a K-7 as a sponsorship from Pentax we would put a link to Pentax on the ride website at www.wheelsnorth.org.

Thanks for your time.

Another PR idea... Olympus put their camera into the popular "Will it Blend" YouTube series...

http://www.youtube.com/user/Blendtec

I'd bet the K-7 would hold up. Could start a competition for the worlds strongest digital camera.

Thanks for the preview.

Actually, the video as seen in Vimeo suffers considerably from JPEG compression artifacts - visible blocks, jaggies, and reduced sharpness. Vimeo claims (as you mentioned) that they support 720p, but still they might transcode (i.e. decode and then encode again) the video file, so these artifacts _could_ be caused by Vimeo rather than the K-7.

Ned, can you confirm or deny that this is the actual original quality of K-7 video? (Please tell me it is not... Otherwise the result is disappointing IMHO)

Thanks
Noam

P.S. The orange cutting clip made me nervous. Here's a tip for cutting food properly and safely: Always hold the food with your fingertips curled inside toward your palm. This way, the side of the knife will always get blocked by your knuckles, keeping it away from your fingertips.

Hi all,
very nice video.
Interesting, is there any chance to see non compressed video (download from sharing pages)?

And i also hope,in future we could pre order this "awesome" Pentax in Europe...

Well Ned, I am not currently a Pentax user but have been considering a switch specially after looking the new K. However after reading the following post at PentaxForums from one of your officials, I am not so sure:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/61573-k-7-feature-questions.html

If this is how Pentax treats its customers then there is no point in going for a Pentax DSLR. I seriously belive that you and that John Carlson guy should post a public oppology at that forum for that offensive way of talking. Being a pentax official he is a pentax representative even if he is posting at the forum in his personal capacity. There is really no excuse for his snobbish attitude

Alejo said...

Rehan, what treatment are you referring to? There are 11 pages of comments and I don't want to read it all to find out. But it would help if you were more specific.

Rehan said...

Plus a comment unrelated to the above post. While the videos that you and other early K-7 users would post are great, I think pentax is definitely missing a trick by not following the example of what Canon did with the Vincent Laforet video. That video created more buzz for 5D-Mk II then anything else.

Canon's teaser for 5D-kII had a bit of an anti-climax initially - people were expecting updates to AF system and introduction of more pro features etc along the lines of D700 but 5D-mk II turned out to be a regular mega-pixel update from canon and nothing much more. But this video was the one which just sent 5D-mkII soaring into popularity.

Ahy doesn't pentax higher someone to produce a high quality video from K-7 and use that as a demonstration of its capabilities

Rehan said...

Alejo, right in the fist post John Carlson suggests that the users at PentaxForums are not very "civilized". not only that he then again asks them to be civilized in their posts otherwise he will stop posting at the forum; which he then suggests is not in their favor since he is the only one from pentax posting at that forum who can answer their questions in detail. i found the tone of his post as being very snobbish and unfriendly to his customer base

And when some members of the forum displayed their dislike for his comments and pointed out that he was rude, he told them that they are proving his point about the users on this forum being not civilized. i found his remarks as being completey inappropriate

Alejo said...

Rehan, I don't disagree with you that it would build great grassroots support if Pentax came out with a video that had high quality production value. BUT it is important to note that the K-7 is nowhere close to being in the same league 5D-mkII.

The Canon has a full-frame sensor, 21mp, shoots 1080p video, superb high ISO performance, and costs over $1000 more. It also doesn't suffer from the pitfalls (CMOS jell-o motion) that the consumer grade Nikon and Canon video-capable cameras face. I don't really see it in Ned's videos but then again they were fairly simple shots, except the little league game.

Speaking of that, IF the K-7 doesn't have the Jell-o motion video problem, THAT would definitely be something to show off. The test should probably involve having the camera side to side, in front of something with vertical lines (like a building).

Alejo said...

OK, for the sake of not-hijacking Ned's post, I'll make it my last...

Rehan, I see your point about John Carlson but it's really not that big of a deal. Mildly insulting at most, but nothing worthy of controversy.

And in my previous post, I meant to say "...having the camera pan side to side..."

Rehan said...

Alejo, I agree that K-7 is not in the same league as 5D mk-II but it still has much a larger sensor than even the high end camcorders. so in the right hands it should be able to produce great looking videos. Most 5D-mkII users would not be able to produce a video of the quality that Vincent Laforet produced, but he demonstrated the possibilities. An APS-C video sensor should be able to do a lot and that needs to be demonstrated.

Please excuse me, I'm a clown, I originally posted this comment to the wrong blog post. Once more, with feeling:

I grabbed the source file, very nice footage! The K7 looks to be a wonderful camera.

I do have a question, however; would you mind going into a bit more detail on how you arrived at the 540p number for Youtube HD? Every HD video I've seen on the site stores a 1280x720 file in the browser's cache. Higher resolution footage will be scaled down, I believe, but only to 720, not 540.

I still wouldn't use recompressed footage to judge the potential of a camera, of course, but as best I can tell Youtube is genuine HD. How did you perform your tests?

Bryan said...

Any possibility of getting 24p capability on the K-7? In a video production capacity this would be incredibly useful!
